i built a pc (my first) and when i turn it on the psu fan light comes on for a second as well as my cpu fan then it turns off and the system doesnt start. i have:

pentium 4 3.2ghz cpu
ECS 865PE-A Socket 478 Intel 865PE ATX Intel Motherboard
radeon 9800pro
600watt psu
cd/dvd drive
samsung 160gb hd
i had 1.24 gb ram but was sick of taking that out of my system im on now, so for right now it only has 256mb ram

very frustrating because i had socket lga775 and the psu's for that were making me mad cuz they wouldnt work, so i returned everything and got socket 478 because thats what i used in a class i took, um,i hope nothing to serious is wrong with my pc :(

Sounds like something is toching the case. Check all screws for something that could be grounding the motherboard.

I had this problem once. How I solved it was I built the PC outside of the case. Get a board and place the MB on it and hook up all the power. Then try to start it.

I'm not an expert, but I think I would check the Power Supply to make sure it is good. If it's new, it is possible that it is bad out of the box. If it's used, than it could've just given up the ghost....

Try a new PS....

i did, i have a spare 350 watt psu and i put it in there at first and it did same thing, i just thought that the psu wasnt big enough to handle the comp, so then i bought the 600 watt, and it did same thing :| my new mobo comes tomorow hopefully my new comp will start, 2 cpus 4 mobos and 4 psu later *cries* :(

ok well i got a new mobo put it in and it did the same thing, so im guessing its the psu, because if its the cpu im just going to have a heart attack, because newegg probably already hates me. :(
