DVD Drive doesn't detect DVD's

Hello. I have a Samsung SD-608 DVD/CD ROM and today I tried putting a DVD into it, and it would not detect it at all. I went into My Computer and clicked on the drive ( D: ) and it said "Please insert a disc into the drive". I used to be able to play DVDs on this computer, and now I can't. Any ideas what could be wrong with it? I do not have a CD for the drive, but I tried updating the drivers already but Windows could not find a better driver than the one I already had. I am on Windows XP.

There could be several issues here.

XP is a USB environment and there can be several USB ports. I've seen a conflict where drives stop working because of all of the USB stuff installed.

What I would do first, is go into device manager and remove the cdrom, close out and reboot. Hopefully that should solve the problem.

If that doesn't, I would suggest removing all of the USB items in device manager and see if that cures it. If you do this, it may prompt you for your install disks for your USB items.

The drive isn't hooked up to any USB ports. It's inside the computer, above my CD Burner. In the device manager, I have the option to uninstall the drive or disable it. Which one should I do? I've tried the update driver option, but windows cannot find a better driver than the one I already have.

Edit: The DVD Drive plays regular audio cd's just fine.

uninstall/romove it then restart.

Ok, I did that, and when I restarted windows found the new hardware, and everything went well. But, I'm still having the same problem.

I put the DVD in, and the light on the drive blinks, and there's a disk icon next to the pointer. This goes on for a minute or two, and then nothing happens. I go into WMP, and when I go to to the menu to select the drive that the disc is in, it says "no disc in drive".

Hmm...
