Changing Mother Boards...

Postby Junior_co » Mon Nov 14, 2005 9:40 pm

OK, So this is kinda part of the 'Comp won't start' discussion but it isn't at the same time.

We bought a new MB because our #2 computer won't run. Figured we would upgrade while doing all the work.

What we want to do is put the New MB in the #1 computer and put the old #1 MB into the #2 computer.

Is this just a plug and play type process or is it better to start from scratch...

What kind of problems might I be getting myself into.

I've built all the computers I've ever owned, but they have always been from the ground up, so I just don't know.

Thanks again and Good on Ya!!!

The "correct" (according to Microsuck) way is to reinstall with another copy of windows. They see a motherboard upgrade as a new machine. I however disagree.

The problem you will most likely run into is the machine will attempt to boot but not be sucessful. If this happens, a REPAIR install will correct it. You shouldnt have to format anything. A repair install will wipe out the old drivers, this of course will allow you to boot with the new board and allow you to install the correct drivers.
