Won't Boot

Postby Jisby » Wed Dec 17, 2003 4:13 am

Hi all!

I'm trying to get a computer set up for a friend of mine and ran into a snag. For some reason the computer won't boot up. When I push the power button, the power light comes on and the drive light comes on and stays a solid red. It sounds like the harddrive is working, but then stops. Nothing comes on the monitor at all, in fact the light on the monitor just flashes orange. There are no beeps at all.

I've actually had this computer running and managed to install Windows 98SE on it. I've tried two different monitors and still the same thing. This computer is a homemade (if that makes any difference). It has 64MB RAM, a 10G HD, and I believe it is a 333 MHz (not quite sure, but around that range).

I'm thinking (and hoping it isn't) the video card. If someone can think of anything I'd appreciate the help. Thanks in advance.

Ive had problems like this before. Did you change any hardware settings? Check the back of the cd-rom drive, and make sure that the pins are set accordingly. (ie. If you have a direct, grey cord going from ur MotherBord to ur CD-Rom drive, make sure your cd-rom drive is set for Master.) it should say on your drive how to do this. Second, make sure EVERYTHING is plugged in right. Last, if nothing here works, switch the video cards from your computer to his, to test it. If yours works, its the video card thats wrong. If it doesnt work, post another reply. Can you see ANYTHING AT ALL on the moniter at start-up? Can u get into safemode?

Possible Answer

Sounds like the graphics card to be honest.

It may be loose. Try pressing it into the AGP slot 'very firmly'. They can be extremely tempremental if not inserted all the way.

Hope it's not your card.

Good Luck.
