Well addix, its not a dumb question but there are alot of blanks to fill in. Lets start with what motherboard do you have and what do you intent to use the machine for? Are you looking to build something big and powerful for gaming or something a little more conservative for just internet browsing, cd burning etc.? What kind of budget are you working with?

venney is right, $500 is about half of a good gaming rig. The problem addix is that games are becoming much more demanding which requires alot more machine than it use to. Your going to spend a minimum of $200 for a fairly decent video card, $200 - $300 for a processor, $100 for a motherboard and roughly $150 for decent memory.

Trying to get a gaming PC with a tight budget is pretty hard. However its not impossible, with patient and a lot of research it can be done.
Personal tips:
1) Instead of New, why not try 2nd hardware parts. Such as ones from auction sites eg Ebay. Cons about this, is the risk, you may end up with a faulty item or an item not as described. Pros, if you look around long enough, you will come across bargains that occurs once in a life time. Plus most 2nd hand item are cheaper too.
2) Research the product that you want to buy. Always, ALWAYS! read reviewS on the internet before purchasing. Notice the bold S after review, dont just read one review, read many. That way you are more likely to get a bang for your buck and get less bias view.
Also about Tip2, you will be surprised how much you'll learn and will know after reading reviews. I dont mean this by how much you will learn about the product that you want to buy, but how much you will learn about what to look for and alternative product that may exist for your purpose.
Think my post is getting too long, so I wont bore you anymore then my last tip.
3) When buying computer hardwares now days, dont take in the UPGRADE factor too much.
