1 x DDR266 DIMM socket

I have a slightly older (right after they came out whenever that was) Via M1000 Mini ITX Board. I've had it forever and I'm ready to sell it. The only thing it's missing to be a kiss butt mini computer is RAM.

I have tried a few pieces I had laying around but just got beeps from the pc speaker. I know for sure that the ram slot is working, but what I don't know is what my options are on new ram.

VIA System Memory states that it needs - 1 x DDR266 DIMM socket

It could be that 266 was the highest it went back when I bought this thing, but when I look up DDR266 it is way more expensive than the faster DDR chips available at higher speeds, probably due to lack of demand for that outdated stuff.

What I'm asking, is if I get something like "1GB 400MHZ DDR 1GB PC3200 / 400MHZ DDR - - (128X64) 184 PIN DIMM" will my computer automatically clock it down to 266 and let it work? It is literally half the price to get the that chip than a 512 of the PC266.

Basically as long as I get something 184 pin will I be alright?

Thanks!

Mark
