Sounds like you're not alone: .
Also found the following on DVDplusRW.org

"If you encounter reading problems with the Pioneer DVD 116-R or RW, make sure that the disc is full for about 1/12th of the capacity (also known as "30 milimeter compatibility mode"), i.e contains at least 5 minutes recorded in HQ mode, 10 minutes SP, 15 minutes LP or 20 minutes EP mode. Some DVD-ROM drives need a disc to contain a certain amount of video to allow laser power calibration to function correctly."
Wish I could help more... brad

So in other words, not much I can do? I read the link you gave me and started to get the idea that was the case.

Well, I'd contact Pioneer first. Give them all the details. Meanwhile maybe someone else here can help..

Can you view data DVDs in explorer?

No, in Explorer, it tells me to insert a disc if I put a DVD in the drive. If I put any other CD, CD-R, or CD-RW, it reads just fine.

I contacted Pioneer, they told me to update the firmware, which I did...still no dice, any takers?

t's possible it's a hardware problem - is the drive still under warranty?

You could try & remove windows from the equation - grab a win 98 or ME bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com and boot off that. See if you can view any DVD's in DOS. If you can't then I would definitely be taking the drive back to whereever I bought it from :)
