6-core CPUs

Postby liljim » Sun Jul 12, 2009 7:24 pm

Is this really necessary? 6 cores? I think its just a matter of intorducing something new now rather than something practical anymore. Software barely recognizes quad cores and some still dont utilize dual cores even so why is mainstream pushing 6?

Heres a link with just a couple models thats already released and tagged as server products.

Perhaps the server operating systems can make more use of these chips but i dont know of anything in the gaming industry and certainly the average end user that needs or can use these practically.

You are correct. The only machines that will fully utilize more than 2 cores would be servers. Mostly just the Server OS itself. Any apps would have to be designed to use it. I find that the 4 cores work well for CAD servers and maybe something running Sage Software with all the database stuff like SQL, or Pervasive. ^ cores couldn't hurt I suppose, but I still don't see that much benefit over the Quads.
