networking problems

i have two computers i have had networked for about six months or longer and have not had any problems and last night we had some bad weather and i shut them down and this mourning i couldnt get them to see each other. i have checked the ip addresses and done everything i know to do and i cant get them to see each other. oh by the way they are both xp machines. i would appericeate any help, thanks

This should work

Go to start -->run--> type in "cmd" no quotes

Type in "ipconfig /release" no quotes


Then type in "ipconfig /renew" no quotes


There is a space before the / and if your not sure of the commands
type in "ipconfig /?" no quotes


There is an easier way of doing all of that. I run a GUI interface program from the Windows 2000 cd called wintipcfg.exe from the desktop

Its a setup install. After you install it search for wntipcfg.exe and copy it to the desktop.

I think that the setup install puts the item in program files. I put it on the desk top and tell the user to click on that when they cannot connect and reset their settings. Quick, neat and you don't have to know what your doing !:| Who says that can't be a good thing?

hey i ran the ipconfig tool and it didnt work so i ran the commands you gave and it gave this error "This operation failled as no adapter is in the state permissible for this opperation." i have no idea what that means. it was worth a shot. well hope you can help me out some more this is really getting under my skin.

It sounds like your firewall is blocking the Nics from communicating.

If your running zone alarm or black ice, turn them off also .

Did you just install service pack 2 on those systems? The firewall is activated by default.

Go to start -->run--> type in "cmd" no quotes

then type in ping 127.0.0.1 That will test your nic to see if its installed correctly.

There is also a very real possibility that all you have to do is reset your router. They do go stupid now and then

i am running pc cilliin, adaware, avg, and spybot all the firewalls are down and windows fire wall is down right now . and it still wont work. . i wll get it eventually

Sorry to but in, but i noticed this(won't help your problem), are you running 2 antivirus programs, if you are, it's not a good idea as there maybe a lot of conflicts doing this.

in case you all are wondering i finally got it. the problem was one of my nic cards went out. so i appericeate all yalls help. thanks a lot.
