Copy a DVD destroy the HD???

Hi,
I was at a retail computer store and asked the clerk about DVD copying software for movies. He said it is hit or miss and that an attempt to copy some DVD;'s will destroy yur hard drive if it is enccided with certain encryption. Especially DVD;s from SONY.
Any truth to all this?

LOL, that seems a bit extreme to me. As far as I am aware recording data from a dvd movie is exactly the same as recording data from anywhere else. I mean maybe there’s a chance you could mess something up, but you could mess it up in plenty of ways. I have put plenty of dvds on my pc before, perfectly legitimate reasons.

And as for sony dvds, just a brand name. I think it’s mostly all the same stuff anyway.

And for the new blue ray dvds and hddvd, I would of thought they are exactly the same. You would just need a blue ray reader and a hddvd reader to transfere the data over.

I think maybe the man might have been talking about blue rays or hddvds. Dvds do have copy protection, but I don’t think its particularly hard to over come lol.

Hope I’ve shed some light. Anyone else please say as well.

The other thing that comes to mind is maybe the man in the shop is told to say things like that, so people dont start copying dvds.
I think the principal is the same with games. Game dvds have movies which are copied to the hdd, but they arent copy protected in the same way and usually in differnt formats.

What you were told is probably a lie. It's illegal to wipe someones hard drive against thier will. Data protection act and all that. Ripping a DVD is not illegal if you are making a backup, I think. Same as making a backup CD/DVD for your games or music.
It is very likly the guy in the shop has been told to say that to people to cut down on piracy.
