Converting Vinyl To Mp3

Hi can anyone tell me the best way to convert vinyl's to mp3 format ive tried a few programs that claim you can do it by plugging an RCA cable from the line in on my soundcard to my stereo but that doesnt work.

First, make sure all your stereo components are hooked up correctly to your pc.
From amp RCA headphone jack out, into headphone jack size line in on soundcard.
I used a double ended headphone jack cable with an adapter from a large plug to a small plug. (radio shack)

Next, go to your Volume control panel ( start > control panel > sounds and audio)
and make sure that 'Line in' control is active if not use file > options to activate
Make sure you check the box to have the sound play through your speakers
at this point you should be able to hear the vinyl through your pc.

Next you will need recording software like Sound Forge, Acid or cakewalk to capture the audio.
You can then save the captured audio as an MP3 format with any of the above mentioned software.

I used FlexiMusic Wave Editor to record my granny's voice and to save the audio as Mp3 files. It worked great for me.
