If you have the software to update it,i would take that route...You can manually update from a cd almost as easy as a floppy.Ive done it using a win98se cd as a boot disk.Boot from the 98 disk and choose "Start Computer With CD ROM Support".At the a> prompt, change the directory to you cd and put in a cd containing the flash utility and the rom.

i don't think you are able to get to a dos promt from the winxp install disk... On win98 boot disks you had that option, but I believe they've taken that away in newer versions.

Do you have a floppy at all that you could hook up just for the purpose of updating your bios, then remove it.

If not, it can be done through a boot cd. Bart's boot cd's are some of my favorite.

you could also check out these directions which are specifically for making a CD with the intent of upgrading your bios
