Accessing MS Works files from Word

My old Win 98 computer is dead, along with some of my installed programs, including MS Works 95. I am now running Win XP, with Office Basic Edition 2003 including Exell.
Is it possible to convert Worrks .wps and .wdb files to open in Word and Exell?
I thought it should be, but all I get is a page load of noughts and crosses...............
