Wireless Internet Question

This is from a friend:

"At the place I'm staying at currently, there is a linksys wireless network setup throughout the house. The base and router and all that is in the garage in a hole in the wall, the people that built all these homes did that, not me.

Anyway, the speed on it is really crappy as far as downloading things goes, I was looking at my wireless network list and there is a much faster one, but it keeps saying I need a network key to use it. Does anyone know anything about that? Is there a universal key or something?

If I can't use that one, anyone have any tutorials or something to improve the speed of your wireless network? Thanks to those who help."

The network key is found on the homepage of the routers or modem. It is an IP address, usually beginning with 192.168, depending on your ISP.

Check your wireless router--it needs to be a G type for good speed. A lot of metal between you and the router can slow you down. try running some cat 5 from the modem and drag the wireless router inside and up stairs in your house. That might improve the speed.

The other networks you are seeing, that are requesting a key, probably have WEP encription, you need a password for access to that system.

You might try reconfiguring your wirless router with a different IP, that other unit that won't let you log on might be messing with the same IP (this is a guess on my part, I could be wrong)
