good ol' steam

Postby liljim » Sat Jul 29, 2006 5:59 pm

Hello guys, whats new?

I have a new one for ya, have you ever had the crap beat out of you by steam?

My wife bought Sin Episodes :Emergence and neither of us knew it was powered by the infamous steam. Of course this is a pleasent surprise when you dont have internet access so i am currently using my cell phone and a data cable for internet. Its not much better than dial up but it works. Anyway, i got steam and the game installed then i created a new account. Everything updated as normal, platform files and such, and i was able to register the cd key for sin. From that point on, i havent been able to log that account back into steam to play the damn game. When i try to load the game, the steam login screen appears. I enter my password and click login and nothing happens. I've left it there for an hour and nothing. I went as far as creating another account and it logs in just fine but i cant play the game on it because the cd key is already registered to the first account. Now im stuck with a game i cant play. Have any of you had this or a simular problem? I've been all through the steam support site and havent gotton anywhere. I sent the question to there tech guys 3 days ago and havent got a response yet. Any idea's ?

Have you tried to see if the problem lies with using the cell phone for internet? If you know someone with broardband, ask them if you can try installing steam and logging into the account there.
Only thing I can think of atm.

Hey Psymon, I hear what your saying man but i created another account that can login fine. I just cant use it for the game because the cd key is registered to the other account. That tells me that connectivity is working but something on steams end isnt.

Well I was thinking its something to do with one account having games and the other one being empty. Sin episodes has had another update since you've had these problems and games typically update themselves the instant you log in. I think there could be a bottle neck or whatever when you are trying to log in and possibly timing out, dropping the connection or whatever.
I really haven't heard of anything like this before but thats the only thing I can imagine happening.

Other than that, uninstall steam and everything to do with it and start again :(

I heard back from steam, they had me delete a couple files but in the end you were right about the internet connection. It just simply wasnt fast enough. I have wireless broadband at work so i brought my machine and patched in there. It still took a few minuites but everything is up and running so now i can play at home in offline mode.

Sin is a pretty sweet game, its obvious its built off the HL2 engine. The rag doll physics and map interaction are amazing. The storyline is questionable so far but gameplay is great.

Thanks for the suggestions Psymon, much appreciated.

I really don't like Steam but I understand the logic...just wish it worked better, or faster. I bought Sin Episodes as well & it took forever to just be able to play the game, i.e verification, updates, etc & I'm on cable. Seems like a slow hog to hell. I don't play CSS but HL2 & Sin look great, just wish they didn't have all the baggage.

when steam 1st came out and all it had was CS 1.6 I didn't like it forever. The initial update never worked and took AGES (I was either on 56k or 128K broadband) and I preferd 1.5 anyway. When CZ came out I HAD to use steam to play it, and since then I've been ok with it. It's kept my games up to date without me having to hunt down a patch and manually install it. It's got its own server list so I don't have to use a 3rd party website to find a server to play on (how I played on 1.5). It's finally got a friends list so I can follow my mates into game. When I download a game or update, for me it always downloads at full speed. Unless of course EVERYONE is getting the same game at the same time. I've become quite happy with steam. It would seem like I am one of the few however.

Believe it or not, im through with Sin, needless to say it was EXTREMELY short. It took longer to get it working than it did to complete it.

I can see the advantages of steam, just as Psymon mentioned with the auto updates and such. you better have broadband though. I dont have the option of broadband here at home so i had to bring my PC to work. Honestly, if i had known this game was on steam i wouldnt have bought it. I went through a simular issue when HL2 came out. I loaded that game completely on dialup through steam, it was no walk in the park.
