Running a server on computer

ive been trying to run a server on my computer to play with my friends, ive tried doom 3, cod, hlf2 garys mod, i can never get them to work, i think im doing port forwarding right, but how do i kno what port the game is using, i also disable my firewall and still my friends cant connect, has anyone ever been able to do this and could help me? or kno a tutorial of some kind thanks

I used to run my own server in Counter Strike "back in the day", and you want to have a PC just for the server. If you're playing the game on the computer that you're running the server on (not dedicated), everyone in the game besides you is going to lag like crazy.

Counter Strike is the only game that I ran a server for, so I'm probably not very much help, but hey, I can't say I didn't try.

well was able to run a dedicated doom 3 server just fine, on the same comp, no lag for my friends , no lag for me, i have:

3.2ghz p4
1.25 gb ram
256mb radeon 9800 pro

and like a 700kbs internet connection or something like that

but anyways i figured out how to run a dedicated doom3 server, lms (doom 3 mod) ded server, half life 2 garys mod server, so thank you for that guide and what not
