Grokster, bleh, part 2

Postby freelobotomy » Thu Mar 31, 2005 8:21 pm

Thanks Lilpink, I got the new versions and ran them. Log file to follow. Here's something I just noticed and it's bugging the heck outta me. When I open IE and go to any web page, at the top it says "PC Techforums-Hijack This Support-Provided by HCA Healthcare Co." My wife is a Dr. at HCA and uses this machine as a different user (XP Pro, all updated) to view radiology films from home, sometimes. She has to log on to a Cisco VPN, again as a different user, but I certainly don't want HCA tracking me! Please advise as to how I can get rid of this annoying tag from HCA and if I should be concerned. I DO see reference to it in the log file below and it may be as simple as deleting that entry but I won't do anything until I hear from the Pro's (you folks). Thanks again!

If all else failed, could I just do a system restore to a previous date? Just thought of that but not sure if it would cure my problems. Thanks

You have your Hijackthis in the funkiest folder I've ever seen :D

A Hijackthis fix will get rid of "PC Techforums-Hijack This Support-Provided by HCA Healthcare Co." but there are ways of labelling your browser with whatever you want it to be... mine is 'Lilpink's Kingdom :oP' hehe...give us a shout if you want to change it.

Please copy this to Notepad and print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following:
(They may or may not be there)

gstin.exe

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.)
Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [stmin] C:\DOCUME~1\Ken\LOCALS~1\Temp\gstin.exe

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Remember to reset these when done.
Delete the following Files/Folders if they exist, you may have to reboot into safe mode to delete this:

C:\DOCUME~1\Ken\LOCALS~1\Temp\gstin.exe

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders, Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your "Recycle Bin", reboot and post a new HiJackThis log.

New log file

Postby freelobotomy » Fri Apr 01, 2005 1:09 am

I wasn't able to boot into safe mode, I think due to this keyboard. I'll dig an old one out, if necessary. I was able to delete the Temp\gstin.exe. Let me know if it is imperitive to get rid of the C:\DOCUME~1\KEN\LOCALS~1 folders. And what about System Restore? Do I turn it on or leave it off for now? Thank you very much. Here's the new log file;

System Restore should be back on again... sorry I didn't express myself very clearly.

You shouldn't need the other keyboard - your logfile seems clean :)
