Hardware and game performance

Postby rollso » Sun Jul 09, 2006 10:30 am

I'm not a very computer savvy person but I did some reearch before buying my last computer (for gaming/school) at a budget and am dissapointed. Around 8-9 months ago I bought a custom PC that ran fine except when i played games, it seemed to be running much more slowly then it should. My specs are (dont have very detailed information) 3200 amd athlon processor, 6600 gt video card and 1gb of some generic quality ram. I play games such as counterstrike source, BF2 and World of warcraft(WoW). WoW is the easiest for me to notice how the fps is changing with settings maxed/lowered and in concentrated areas with buildings player models etc. I recently reinstalled windows and had my processor overclocked a few mhz over normal and installed brand new drivers for my graphics card. Degragmented my HD with a program called disckeeper and used CCleaner also. My first time loading into wow turning all my options up in the middle of a highly populated area i ran at around 40 FPS, when i normally run at 10-15 even with every option turned down. As soon as i ran outside a city my FPS shot up to above 70.

After 15 minutes of running the game my computer turned itself off. My computer's temperature wasnt any higher than it was before when it didnt do this. The very next time i booted up WoW my FPS was back down to around 10 and i kept getting disconnected from all the FPS slowdown and freezing. All other aspects of my computer are working fine except for the gaming part. It seems that either im doing something terribly wrong or my parts just arent cut out for running these games. I read reviews about the parts i ordered (i bought a computer from Ibuypower.com) and it seemed that it should be able to play these games at decent framerates. Any help would be appreciated as ive tried many different suggesstions.

Make me think you might have a trojan or spyware on your system.
Please download , unzip it to it's own folder.
Start HijackThis and select 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'
Now post the contents of the logfile back into this thread

Your log is clean.

So that rules out anything malicious causing the problem.

That leaves hardware and/or drivers, it’s going to be a process of elimination it isolate the issue.
My first educated guess would be Ram, based on the error codes not falling into known stop error attributes.

Please download selecting you preferred format.
Either the ISO burnable cd or the Windows and DOS bootable floppy
Create you bootable media and boot your system from that media.
Let Memtest86 run for at least an hour to receive true results.

If you have a CD burner you can download the *.iso file and burn it to a cd
Leave the cd in and reboot your system it should start the memtest 86 automatically.

If you have a floppy drive you can download the Windows and DOS version to make a bootable floppy.
Once you write the floppy leave it in and reboot your system memtest 86 will start automatically.

hehe, i just fixed my problem i think. I opened my case and got all the dust off my fans and other things and my FPS shot up alot. I have all my settings turned up and get an avg of 30 fps in highly populated places. very big improvement. Im surprised something so simple helped so much.

ive after reinstalling my router drivers again i lag in instense fights with lots of spells/particle effects in WoW. Even when around tons of player models i get no internet lag, but during fights with only 5-10 people i get a good 5 seconds of lag then back to normal once things calm down. I dont really understand why my internet would slow down. Any advice? Im lost as to how i could fix this when my connection is strong and was fine in situations like this before.
