XP Password account.

Postby robbro » Tue Feb 26, 2008 12:01 am

Hi i just wondered and it was silly of me to do but can i get files back from a account that is passworded without actually logging onto it because i cant log onto it i have tried reinstalling windows and i got a black screen... and froze.. so i installed xp on it again but diff windows directory "Windows 2" .. i know i shouldnt of done that as it can mess up files but i thought i would be able to get my files from the other account but no luck!

Ive tried to do system restore before i did this but i couldnt do that also as for some reason it would just freeze up on me! so annoying!

if anyone knows how i can copy my files from that account without logging onto it i be happy... i wish i didnt password it now! damn thing !

bart pe has a storage tool that will probably get you in

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

you will need a windows disk to make a bart pe disk but all the instructions are on the site.

Cheers ill try them. Any idea where i get black screen? i crashed on xp installation at start before rebooted and i got that black screen... thats why i had to install xp again over the same partition but different windows folder.

Would i have lost all my files on the other account i cant get into? as i cannot access them at all even if i use another drive and use the one i cant get to as external... it just gives me ACCES DENIED error message!

really bothers me when i cant get things to work right hehe thanks for your replies though! if you have any replies to what i just said now please do :D.

Also i just wondered ... is there a way to delete the files that windows xp copies over for the installation? maybe they are corrupted some how?

1. Black screen could be a video driver problem or conflict have you tried booting to safe mode?.

2. You may have lost your files it depends on where they were stored, if they where in My Computer then yes there is a chance you have lost them.

3. We will try the other fix first and then we will try to take ownership of your files but it's not that easy.

4. A failed install can result in windows writing a run repair install to the MBR, there are ways to fix that but it's scary, you could possibly loose everything.

Woo cheers for help gecko. I finally found a fix to get the files back...

What i had to do is untick (use simple file sharing on folder options)

Then i right clicked the documents of that drive i needed and gave control to another user on that xp account which was not password protected(e.g. admin)

And it worked! I can now copy my files off the drive and onto another now without it saying access denied :D im happy about that!

I still have to format though as my xp is too far gone for repair ive tried repair insall i think i messed up the boot files that copied over for the installation somehow so i couldnt log on xp/go safe mode or anything!

So all I need to do now is copy my files over and format and reinstall again, not too much of a problem just time consuming :D!

Thanks again for your help guys! :D
