Installing New Ram

Postby chuparon » Tue Nov 23, 2004 5:10 am

Ok, I currently bought 1GB of "Kingston 512MB HyperX DDR 333MHz DIMM 2-2-2-5" Ram, and I just wanted to know how do I get the CPU to recognize the new ram that I bought.

I'm asking this because I was stupid and forgot to read how, and now my CPU locks up all the time. it locks up faster when i run more programs, but a lot slower when i just let it sit.

Thanks for the help

Give us a little more info about your system.Anything you can tell us would help, such as manufactor (dell, compaq, gateway,HP) or if its not a "prefab" system then tell us what the motherboard is and what processor and operating system your using.

What kind of PC is it? My dad had it build custom a while ago, and he said he can't remember what brand of stuff he got in it was *sigh*.

Is there a way to tell what kind of motherboard I have?

ProcessorIntell Pentium 4 1.6GH
Operating System Windows XP Pro.

I'm beginning to doubt it has to do with my RAM, I think it may recognize it because when I run "DXDIAG" it sais that i have 512MB of ram.

The reason I asked the question was because since I reinstalled windows XP and all of my drivers, all my programs run exceptionally slow. So i guess I just figured it was a problem with recognizing the RAM

Also, my cpu locks up after I use it for like 10 min, (if using internet). Lock up faster if running another program. and lock up slower if i just let it sit.

Go to this site and download Everest Home edition. It will tell you what kind of MB, CPU, RAM and everything you have, from make to serial number. Best of all the app is free. :)

LOL now help me please, I have a similar problem with new RAM. I have Everest, so if you want to know some type of information ask me and I wil check it. At the moment I have windows xp pro sp2, Pentium 3 processor 800MHz with only 128MB of RAM installed. I have anohter 2 RAM sticks of 256MB each to use (if they are compatible). All RAM sticks are SDRAM PC133.

The problem I'm having is that if I put a 256MB stick with the 128MB installed, it will read them together only as 256MB, even if I install only the 256MB (it reads it as a 128MB - half).

When I first installed the 256MB of RAM with the 128MB, it was all OK (but it was reading only 256MB too). But after a while my PC started to reboot on its own, and with the help of PC Techforums I've found that the 256MB of RAM was faulty. And this was really getting me crazy. Afterwards, still with 256MB (128 + 256), my PC started to reboot when it's still loading windows (about 20 times before windows loads) :|

I had not any choices, so I have removed the 256MB and now I'm working only with a 256MB. But, you can imagine how slow it is a system running WinXP Pro with only 128MB of RAM. So I really want at least another 128MB. Any help or suggestions mates? Remember I have another 2 sticks, 256MB each to test on. I know it's confusing

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a voltage issue. Have you checked to make sure that all the RAM sticks are the same speed?

And check your BIOS to see if the voltage for the RAM is set to automatic.

PC133 is the RAM Speed, they're all PC133. I tried to check the settings of the RAM voltage, but did not fin where it is located in the BIOS. However I've copied the settings of Chipset Features Setup:

Bank 0/1 DRAM Timing: SDRAM 10ns
Bank 2/3 DRAM Timing: SDRAM 10ns
Bank 4/5 DRAM Timing: SDRAM 10ns
SDRAM cycle length: 3
DRAM clock: Host CLK
Memory Hole: Disabled
Read Around Write: Disabled
Current PCI/Host: Disabled
System BIOS Cacheable: Disabled
AGP Aperture Size: 64M
AGP-2X Mode: Enabled
OnChip USB: Enabled
USB Keyboard Support: Disabled

Hmm... What do you think? Am I in the right place? Thanks PCguy :P

Yes I've tried that. From where can I set the setting you've told me before in the BIOS? Installing the latest mobo driver can help? I really want to increase it, because 128MB os slow for WinXP
