Just reinforcing liljim, if you install XP after 95/98/2k the NT bootloader will automatically create boot options for both OSes. I used to dual boot 98 and 2k before I moved to Linux and this is how I set it up.

Perfect...

Win98SE is on IDE1 as Master
There is no slave

the CDRW is on IDE2 as master
the DVD as Slave

This should easy.....

I'm off to pick-up the HDD now ,that and a new CD-Rom for my server box.

I'll be back.

Ok...the 52x cdrom in the other pc went flawless.

Now the HDD in this box is listed in the Device Manager...no exlamation marks.
But it doesn't show up in Windows Explorer.

I went into bios and everything is set to AUTO.
It is also listed correctly as the Slave on IDE1 on the boot-up screen.

What do I need to do here?
How do I f-disk and Format this drive with XP going on it?

Can I use a Win98SE boot disk to get to FDISK and Format?

The drive isnt showing up because theres no partitions on it and yes you can use the 98 boot disk to partition and format it.However it may be easier to boot from the XP disk and let it partition and format the drive.I assume you will want to put XP in FAT32,win98 wont see the new drive if you use NTFS.If you use the XP disk, just be careful that you partiton and format the correct drive :)

Is this what I do....

Unplug the HDD on IDE1Master.....

Take the NEW HDD,plug into IDE1 as master,F-Disk and Format with floppy, then install XP from CD.

When installation done, shut down pc,put back original hdd as master on IDE1 and the NEW drive with XP on same IDe1 as slave....

Is this correct...

I want to get my pc back together tonight.

It sounds like you went back to win98 instead of booting from the disk. The XP disk should be "bootable".Set your cdrom as first boot device in bios and reboot with the cd again.

Just wanted to add that swapping the drives would allow you to install XP but i dont think it will set up the boot loader if both drives aren't present during the install.

ok I'm lost...
You want me to leave the original HDD as Master, put the newHDD as slave,Boot the pc with the cd rom, which i did and it booted to the screen i posted above.

If I click install it doesn't give me achoice of which hard drive to partition ...

So right now I have the orig HDD out...
the new in as primary
partition and formated with win98se floppy!!

Now I goto install winxp and it says CANT DO IN DOS??????

Ok,so now what?
Shut it down, put the orig HDD back as master on primary IDE,put the new formated HDD in as slave on primary and reboot with XPCD ?
