SpyBot S&D Question(s)

Postby msiler » Mon Jun 07, 2004 4:33 am

I am plagued by the constant return of the following 3 items

Common hijacker: Redirected host
Search.netscape.com=207.36.196.189

Common hijacker: Redirected host
Auto.search.msn.com=207.36.196.189

IGetNet: Redirected host
ieautosearch=207.36.196.189

When I run Hijack this I can "clean" them but they just return shortly.

When I run Spybot S&D and try to "Fix" them I get the following message:

Unexpected error in fixing threats
(Datei "D:\Winnt\System32\etc\hosts" Kann Nicht Erstellt Werden. The Process cannot access the file beacause it is being used by another process)

Two questions:
1) What's up with this error message and how can I fix this?
When i go to the "...etc\hosts" file there is only one 1kb host file and it will absolutely not be deleted (I was able to delete 3 other host files though).

2) How do i change the "Destination Address" of these three "Hosts"?
I want to change it to 127.0.0.1 and at least fool them to start

Thank you in advance,
-Matt-

Try booting in safe mode,then disable system restore.Delete the unwanted files,reboot then turn system restore back on.

I am using Windows 2000pro.
There is no System Restore to turn off.

Any other way to accomplish what you recommend?

It's a common hijack attempt to change your Search Engine.
I'd download and install: . Now Run it and post a copy of the Log File here.
(Always create a Folder for HiJackThis anywhere but your Temp/Temporary Internet Folders. This is where it will save the backup files needed if there's a problem.)

Did you try doing it in safe mode?

An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modMain_FixOther1Item(sItem=O1 - Hosts: 207.36.196.189 ieautosearch)
Error #70 - Permission denied

Windows version: Windows NT 5.00.2195
MSIE version: 6.0.2800.1106
HijackThis version: 1.97.7

Above is the Error Message I get everytime I run Hijackthis and then try to fix these three problems: (hijackthis log in my next post)

1) Search.netscape.com=207.36.196.189
2) Auto.search.msn.com=207.36.196.189
3) ieautosearch=207.36.196.189

They refuse to be removed and always come back upon re-boot. Even after removing them in Safe Mode.

If I cannot remove them then at least maybe I can change their Addresses so they are no longer a problem.

How do I change their "Destination Address" to 127.0.0.1

Have you tried going into the Hosts file to see if these entries exist? If they do you can edit the Hosts file to 127.0.0.1. Actually you don't need a Hosts file so you could rename the file to something like Hosts.old and reboot the PC to see if that corrects the problem.

Hi RB,
1) I think I am loking in the corrct place for the "hosts" files:
D:\WINNT\System32\Drivers\Etc

2) They do NOT exist in the the above hosts file

3) I have repeatedly renamed the suspicious host file in the above folder but it always reverts to it's old self and reappears after deletion (in safe mode also)

4) How can I find the hosts file on my computer - a regular search yields nothing?

5) When and if i do find them how do i edit or delete them?

6) Spybot S&D shows that they are on my computer when I use the "Tools" and look under Hosts Mode - so I am sure they are on my computer somewhere...

Thanks again for the help,
-Matt-
