CPU at 100% usage

Postby Madashell » Tue Jun 08, 2004 1:20 pm

I have scanned my system with NAV, online Mcafee and also used Adaware and Spybot S & D. But none of this has helped. It is one of the svchost processes that is being shown on task manager as the using all of the CPU.

Please find attached log below. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

After you've finished fixing this problem I strongly recommend that you visit the and download the Critical Updates.

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following: (They may or may not be there)

Scheduler V3.exe
Scheduler.exe

Turn off System Restore. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.) Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Now delete these Folders or Files that are Highlighted: (You may need enable "Show all Files" and disable "Hide System Files" in Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options / View Tab) (You may have to boot to "Safe Mode" in order to delete some Files/Folders)

C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Now, empty your TEMP Folder / Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your "Recycle Bin" and reboot.

Windows update

Postby Madashell » Tue Jun 08, 2004 3:10 pm

Hi Brad,

Thanks for your help. When I rebooted the machine it worked fine but after I went to the windows update page everything slowed down and svchost was back up to around 99% in the task manager.

This is making it very difficult to download the required windows updates. Do you have any more ideas.

Also I have included a hijack this log after carrying out the earlier instructions.

Try this:
Go to Start / Run / Type msconfig / Click Ok / Select the "Startup" Tab / Uncheck these entrees:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SiS Tray] C:\WINDOWS\System32\sistray.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SiS KHooker] C:\WINDOWS\System32\khooker.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SiSUSBRG] C:\WINDOWS\sisUSBrg.exe

Now reboot and see if that helped. Please post back.
(It's a noted fact that the SiS programs cause a IE problem on some machines.)

Still stuck

Postby Madashell » Tue Jun 08, 2004 8:33 pm

Cheers Brad,

I tried what you suggested but with no luck. Even when I start in Safe Mode the CPU usage is at 97-99%. It is all tied up in one svchost.

This has been happening for the last week now and is really frustrating.

What are these:
E:\WUTemp\com_microsoft.XP_SP1_Express_5590\sp1aexpress.exe
e:\1e9244b58dcae59\update\update.exe

Is "E" your CD drive or a Partition?

I am currently running an online virus scan using McAfee but it is running so slowly it looks like it will take 8-10 hours.

you can either kill the process, or assign it a lower priority so your virus scanner gets a chance to run faster

Killing the process

Postby Madashell » Tue Jun 08, 2004 9:51 pm

I am currently running an online scan. I have already tried to kill the process (svchost, exe) but when I do this I lose my internet connection. Trying to lower the priority so is also a non starter as task manager will not allow it.

Try it first with it on. That was going to be my next suggestion. If it still won't update or freezes, turn off or disable all of Norton.
I think it had to do with the update.exe on your E drive.
