Freezy PC

Postby ColaBoy » Mon Jun 14, 2004 11:18 am

Now this is an on going problem I've had for some time, over a year I think, but I thought after installing a new hard drive,a new video card and updating all my drivers it would disappear. Its simple,my PC freezes up while playing any kind of polygon intensive game ie GTA Vice City,Day of Defeat etc. My pc runs fine otherwise. Its odd because it happens after random amounts of playing time. It could be 10 minutes or over 1 hour. All drivers are updated and present and its just driving me MAD!!!!

I would suggest uninstalling all games, except 1. Then play that to see if the problem is or is not showing. Then you can install the next game and try again, and so on. This way you can pinpoint it to a game, and remedy will get easier. That is if your saying is correct that the problem does not show when you are not gaming

Ive only got two games installed at the moment anyway, and its a new, clean drive .I had about 7 on my older drive so even a reduction does,nt seem to help.

There are a number of reasons why your “PC freezes up”, heat is probably the most common reason for freeze-ups.
I would suggest that you first turn on error event reporting, you can do this through the
Control panel > System > Advanced tab > under Startup and Recovery click the “Settings” button
Put a check in the box for “Write an event to the system log” and uncheck the box for “Automatically restart”

Now the next time it happens we can investigate into what is causing the freezing.
If you now get a BSOD (blue screen of death) write down the error information and post it back here.
If you do not get a BSOD then you can check through the system log for the error event.
Control panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer look for the error and post what it says back here.

Oo,sounds interesting,I'll give it a go. I did consider overheating. I installed a hot air expelling fan thingy in but that did'nt help. I also now have the sides of my pc off.

In the event viewer you will want to look at the system events.

None of the errors you posted are dated today so I don't think we have found it yet.

I would suggest that you try it’s freeware, or some other type of temperature monitoring program.

are you running with the old install or did you a clean install on the new drive? If that is the case, you can still test your memory, otherwise i start thinking about a bad mobo

Yeah its a clean install. I will test my memory although I think I did that with my old drive and everything was fine. Erm,is mobo a motherboard?

memtest86 is a good memory tester; leave it running for a couple of hours. And yes mobo is the short for motherboard
