Boot from a Win98 boot disk...
Choose boot with CD-Rom support...
At the prompt type "E:/setup....or whatever your CD-Rom drive letter is,could be "D".

Should load from there.

How do you have it installed on comp?
Try installing the CD-rom on IDE2 as Master.
Booting from the Win98 Floppy gives you CD-Rom support, you don't have to have the Boot sequence set to boot cd first.Just type the drive letter at the A: prompt.
Have you tried this?
Is the IDE cable installed correctly with RED LINE toward power connector?

I take it that this is a CD-rw drive, you might need proprietary drivers for this drive to read CDs, hence the “bootable cd non evident” message.

What is the brand name and model number of this CD drive?

Hi and thanks for your time......I do have an ide cd-rom fitted to the pc however it has been disabled for 2 yrs. because of suspected burnt-out (non-read and smell) I uninstalled it via device mgr. recently in an attempt to eliminate it totally from the boot/cd problem...

The remaining drive is a sony cd-r/rw-crx-145s (scsi).....this drive is seen at boot according to this msg received "boot from ATAPI cd-ROM" but when the cd's in question are loaded get "bootable cd non exist"..

Current aspi files installed, drivers reported not required as the drive is managed via the scsi card???

Is this drive the only SCSI device on you SCSI adapter?
Are the Active Termination pins jumped correctly?
Have you set the SCSI ID correctly (do not set it as 7)?

"boot from ATAPI CD-ROM" would mean that it is only looking for an ATAPI drive which is not a SCSI drive. See if your BIOS has SCSI in the boot order that should fix it. If not there should be a seperate BIOS for your SCSI card. What kind of SCSI card do you have?

Gecko
yes it is the only scsi device in the pc, it is the only cd-rw connected. I do not know how to answer these two questions, how can I find this info?

"Are the Active Termination pins jumped correctly?
Have you set the SCSI ID correctly (do not set it as 7)?"

first, you must know what card it is.
2 ways : in device manager under scusi, or open the box and look for the label on the card.

All information is available at adaptec.com
