Gigabyte mobo and memory compatability question

Postby Noob » Wed Jun 23, 2004 5:47 am

Hi All

My mobo is a GA-8IG (shown here if you're interested: http://tw.giga-byte.com/MotherBoard/Pro ... GA-8IG.htm)

It says it is compatible with DDR266 (PC2100 or PC1600) memory. I have only PC2700 memory and cannot find any PC2100 anywhere (believe me, I''ve looked around). It works ok up until 768 Meg RAM but after that it just reboots itself all the time after a small period of time (sometimes it doesn't even get through the boot up process). At least I'm guessing it's due to memory overload but then again the stick I took out may be bad. I only got the mobo less than a year ago and already there is no RAM about for it! Is this true and PC2700 or above cannot be used with it or is it just the specs were written for the mobo and never updated as newer memory came out? I don't want to buy more memory if it's of no point but if it's possibly a faulty stick and I can whack more in, I will.

Thanks

I don't think your problem lies in memory speed. If you are mixing different brands, different speeds (ie pc 2700, 2100, 3200), or different timings (CL - cas latency) then you're more likely to have problems.

I ALWAYS buy brand name RAM, and I only buy it from companies that prove their worth. I usually check out any web-retailer before I buy from them at www.resellerratings.com

If you'd go to crucial.com, and choose gigabyte, then motherboards, than your model number You'll see that they sell pc2100 sticks of ram. They also show faster speeds of ram being compatible. Your current motherboard won't take advantage of the faster ram, but if you'd decide to upgrade to a newer motherboard in the next few months, you'd have the faster ram already. If you aren't gonna upgrade for longer than that, I'd just get the pc2100 stuff because DDR2 and DDR3 based systems will be prevelant by then.
