Hi, I know quite a bit about computers so do not be scared to talk in technical terms.
There Is one particular thing I do not know about, and that is RAM. I have a 450MHZ Windows 98 SE
System and 128MB ram.
I have read that SE can take up to 2GB of ram, but as I got my computer in 1999, I do not know what type of ram to buy on ebay to upgrade it.
Do I need SD ram or DDR ram, what is the difference?
If I brought some ram that was in a dell computer for example if I slot it into my computer would it just work?

I do have some spare 32MB ram already but on putting it in it was the blue system error message.
But a year ago I put xp on it and it was fine with the ram. But due to problems with exiting files and programs I had to uninstall xp and so with it the ram went
Why do you think this happened?
Why only with XP?
People have said that you can install more ram to 98 so why does my system not like it?
What 32 MB Ram do I have?
Is it SD or DDR the pins look like this?
!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please can anyone offer some help my system is very slow and this ram boost I know would help it run much better.

Your not understanding me, its not the fact that you have a Pentium 3 system, that just tells me you have 242-pin SEC or a 370-pin PGA. Possible a Socket 1 or PGA370, 32KB L1 cache and 256-512KB L@ cache. Processor can run between 450MHz - 1.13 GHz. Doesnt tell me anything about your ram only that your board supports SDRAM.
Are you sure you have an empty memory module?
Your system must support both the technology and form of a memory module.
Now your system will prob use PC 100 but if buy PC 133 it will work but only run at 100.

I apologize it seems the link doesnt want to work. Go to www.shopkingston.com, select by memory type, SDRAM PC133, 168-pin Dimm.
PC 133 is cheaper I believe than PC 100, it will still work.

Sounds like a P-II you got there if it's a 450MHZ.
So that right there tells you that you have SD-Ram.
DDR was not that wide spread in 1999.
Now it doesn't really matter which Sd-Ram you run whether it be PC100 or PC133...if it's PC-100 and you install PC-133 it will only run at the PC-100 level,but it will work.

Do you know the make and model of your Motherboard?
What's the Make and Model of your PC?

Geek girl you really know your stuff am impressed, although I do know about computers, this area <RAM> I know next to nothing about as I have never touched it before.

What does PC 100 mean?, what is about I guess it is the speed the ram runs at?
And I know it is not the fact I have P3 system that tells you about my RAM , but I was saying that does a p3 system work with DDR or SDRAM? But now I know.

I know at the moment I have two 64MB ram slots in my computer, there are I think two more slots free. What else should I look for to tell you please tell me.

I can not take the comp apart to see the motherboard make or anything like that as my family need the computer for tonight, I will do that when they are out tomorrow.And the pc I had made for me so it has no make or modal it is just a build pc.

liljim cheers for that, I ran dxdiag and it tells me for sure it is a P3, but at 450MHZ it should really be a P2, oh well.
So you think 512MB would be a safe bet for 98 SE?
My hard drives are nearly full, can this effect system ram? i thought they were separate? Someone told be if your ram is low your comp starts to write to the hard drives. But still I can't see how low hard drive space can affect it, can it?
I will find out which make it is soon, once I open my comp up, can the motherboard that was made in the late part of 1999, reject more Ram.
Why would 98 SE have a max of 2 GB if over 1Gb, you said would be "overkill" for the pc?
If I upgrade to 512 will I notice a difference?
