cpu and motherboard compatibility?

Postby mulengro » Wed Jul 28, 2004 12:04 am

i've got an Asus P4B motherboard 400FSB and looked at the website that it can take till 2.4 GHZ

now a friend of mine is selling his 2.4 cheap

now its a P4 2.4 533 FSB Mhz and will it be compatible with my mobo?

cheers

looking around quickly around on the web, it appears there was both a 400 fsb model and a 533 fsb model of the 2.4 ghz chip. I would guess that your motherboard would only support the 400 mhz model. If you'd put in the 533 mhz chip, it would likely get detected as a much slower chip.

what speed are you upgrading from? Unless you are going from a slower FSB chip or below the 1.5 gig mark, i highly doubt you'll notice any difference at all. If you don't increase the FSB, most activities won't speed up at all... the only things you'll notice the difference on are CPU intensive programs like zipping and unzipping files and SETI type computations. Internet browsing, and office type programs will likely seem exactly the same to you. Gaming probably won't be increased by very much either, as gamings general fallback is the speed between ram and the video card (which would be that FSB number). You might gain two or three frames per second, but it's likely not worth your cost for such an insignifigant gain.

short answer to your questoin, No, i don't think the 533 fsb chip will work with your motherboard

thanks testrips

am currently got a P4 1.6 as was planning to get a new motherboard and cpu at same time. Since my friend offered his 2.4 cheap and then he said that is was a 533 fsb had doubts if it will be ok with my motherboard

hmmmnn might get a motherboard now then save up for a cpu i guess. Just tight on cash atm. anyways while on motherboard ASUS is a good brand?

you could still buy your friend's cpu if it's gonna fit your speed needs, you'll just need to get a motherboard that'll support it. If you get somethng that supports faster FSBs you'd be able to keep your next upgrade cost down b/c you could just toss in a faster chip.

keep in mind that you might need faster ram to really take advantage of the new motherboard's capabilities though.
