I wouldnt recommend using file sharing programs but if you must - you should grab Peer Guardian from http://www.methlabs.org/methlabs.htm

Very light firewall type program that blocks suspect IPs from connecting to you. This block range includes such fine folks at RIAA, MPAA and most studios...

I only ever use Direct Connect.. along with PeerGuardian.. and I know most of the people whose hubs I visit..

I have always found the likes of Kazaa, WinMX, Gnutella and so on to be so painfully slow as to be not worth the hassle..

but that's just my opinion..

I use both limewire and emule--google the name and the program is free. I gave up on Kazaa--most of the music downloads require a "security patch license from MS" Which means you can't play what you've just downloaded unless you already have the license.

Limewire is fast, but the selections are limited the program allows you to check your download for kazaa license restrictions before you download the whole file which is nice.

emule is a slower download program, the more you share the faster your download speed--you can find anything under the sun there.

You definatly need a fire wall and a real good anti virus program. bear in mind that you will probably be on the leading edge of any new virus when it hits. I found two viruses on my system after running the updates in the span of a year. Down load the files and don't execute them until you've done two weeks of virus updates and disk scans. And if its an mp3 play it, they don't get infected.
