Computer Won't Boot Up

Hi

Over the last few weeks my computer has been running very slow

Now it does not boot up

I can get into safe mode but only for a short period of time then I always get one of two error messages appearing

the first is a blue screen saying the following:

A Fatal Exception 0D has occurred at 0028: CF83AEE0. The current application will be terminated

* Press any key to terminate application
*Press CTRL+ALT+DEL again restart computer


The second is a white message icon which pops whilst in Windows

An error has occured in your program. To keep working anyway click ignore and save work to new file

I have 2 removable Hard disk drives one is 4.3Gb and is around 3 years old. This has Windows 98s.e and alot of applications and files on it.

The other is 20Gb and I have only installed Windows 98 and Office. It is not clogged with large applications or files

The point is when I swap hard drives the exact same is happening???

I tryed to run scandisk whilst in safe mode and the following happened. The hard drive was rattling away for about five minutes but it was still sitting at o%. Then the screen went blue and that same windows error appeared.

I then switched the computer off took that Hard Drive out and put in the 20G one. I formatted this so I could try and install Windows 98 from scratch.

So everything was fine and Windows 98 installation was going smoothley. Then I think it was the 3rd step where it asks you to restart your PC.

Then a white box came up saying the following:

Application Error
SUWIN caused a general protection fault in module USER.EXE at 0001:5187

Then the screen went black with the following message at the top

STANDARD MODE:BAD FAULT IN MS-DOS EXTENDER.
FAULT:000D STACK DUMP:0000 0000 0070
RAW FAULT FRAME: EC=0000 IP=SOAB CS=070F
FL=3257 SP=8212 SS=02F7


My Spec for my PC is as follows:

AMD-K6 400Mhz
Removable H.D.D's.. 1st: 4.3 Gb Win 98se
2nd: 20gb Win 98se
Memory:160Mhz
Norton Anti-Virus Installed



Thats about it please help (sorry about the length)

Could it be that my motherboard is causing the problem

first of all make sure that you COMPLETELY format the drive. some applications will not completely format, but will leave some crap on there, so get something that will completely let you write your hard drive to 0's. my biggest suggestion would be to upgrade to XP, or win2000. 98 is very buggy, and an upgrade to XP would make ur comp run faster. there is a commonly missheld conception that older comps cant run xp. this is not true, xp is actually easier to run than 98. no doubt this would fix your problem, but if u dont have a way of getting XP, jsut try reformatting and making sure everything gets erased. i know the default windows one will not do this, but you can do it through dos, or other apps.

I did some research on both of the errors that you are receiving
1. A Fatal Exception 0D has occurred at 0028: CF83AEE0
2. SUWIN caused a general protection fault in module USER.EXE at 0001:5187
Bad Ram can cause both of the errors. I would suggest that you try removing one stick of ram and try booting up your system afterwards if that doesn’t resolve the problems then try the other stick of ram.
