Firewall Port number.

Postby venney » Fri Aug 06, 2004 5:51 pm

ok guys i want to do this, i want to let bit torrent tho the xpfirewall. ive got this here.

If you are using a software firewall, then you must also enable incoming connections to be answered by the BitTorrent client program. Note that Windows XP includes a primitive firewall ("Internet Connection Firewall" or ICF) which you may have to configure for BitTorrent. Here are the directions for opening ports in the Windows XP firewall:

Open the 'Network Connections' folder (click Start, then Control Panel, then Network and Internet Connections, then Network Connections.)
Click the shared connection or the Internet connection that is protected by Internet Connection Firewall, and then, under Tasks, click Change settings of this connection.
On the Advanced tab, click Settings.
For each port you wish to forward, (i.e. 6881, 6882, ... 6889) do the following:

On the Services tab, click Add and enter all of the following information:
In Description of service, type an easily recognized name for the service, such as "BitTorrent".
In Name or IP address of the computer hosting this service on your network, enter 127.0.0.1 (this means "the local machine.")
In both External and Internal port number for this service, enter the port number, e.g. 6881.
Select TCP, then OK.

im trying to do this, but im not sure about this part
In both External and Internal port number for this service, enter the port number, e.g. 6881.
how do i no my port number?

you don't HAVE a port number as such.. you have 65535 virtual ports on your computer..

bit torrent looks as though it uses ports 6881 upover (looking at that example)..

so basically.. you start at 6881.. and keep counting up.. for as many simultaneous downloads you want to do..

so.. if you wanted to download 10 files at a time.. you would open all ports from 6881 to 6890.

hope that helps :)

ok sorry im just not getting this.
ive tryed it but im not getting any where. could you please explain this.
this is my hole situation il explaing it as best as i can. i have bit tornado (i think) and when im downlaoding some thing theres a light on it and it says

Yellow (which is what mine allways says - "You have not recived any incoming connections from others. It may only be because no one has tried. if you never see the status light turn green, it may indicate your system is behind a firewall or proxy server. Please look into routing bittorrent through your firewall in order to receive the best possible download rate"

my downlaods work, but i have 512 broadband and i dont get it to fast but i diddnt realise it was a problem. but i want to make it oppartate corectly so it uses what im paying for. please can some one go step bye step in idot language for me on what to do please. i have bit torrent allowed to pass through my panda anti virus firewall so its not that firewall. maby this proxy service.

i would really apprichate it. thanks
