FYI GeekGirl, this thread is about a totally different problem than the one titled "suspicious script?!?"

Hey robym6...
Did you do an UPGRADE from a previous OS?
We need to repair your File System first...

1) Boot from the WinXP CD to a command prompt with CD support.
2) Type in the following when you get to a command prompt

C:
PATH=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND
ATTRIB -H -S -R MSDOS.SYS
EDIT MSDOS.SYS

Anywhere in that file that you see ".000" remove the ".000"

ALT-F X and save the file.

Now reboot your computer.

Run HJT again and post new logfile.

I did upgrade from WinME to WinXP Pro. XP is installed under WINDOWS.000. I tried booting from the upgrade CD and got a blue screen that gave 3 options: enter setup mode, repair a windows installation, and quit. There wasn't a command prompt in setup, but there was in repair, but it only allowed me to type in one character. If this could be a long fix, I'm probably gonna get a new computer soon, so it might be a better idea just to deal with the problem until then, since it doesn't happen every time I use the internet.

Thanks, RM

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following: (They may or may not be there)

devldr32.exe
CTHELPER.EXE --->
dwwin.exe

Turn off System Restore. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.) Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS.000\SYSTEM\blank.htm
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WINDVDPatch] CTHELPER.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS.000\UpdReg.EXE

Go to Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs and remove the following if they are there:

CTHelper
UpdReg

Now delete these Folders or Files that are Highlighted: (You may need enable "Show all Files" and disable "Hide System Files" in Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options / View Tab) (You may have to boot to "Safe Mode" in order to delete some Files/Folders)

C:\WINDOWS.000\SYSTEM\blank.htm
C:\WINDOWS.000\System32\devldr32.exe

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders (WinXp has up to 4 of them) / Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your "Recycle Bin" and reboot.

NOTE:CTHELPER is a background task that is a plug-in manager for Creative drivers. The theory is that 3rd party manufacturers can use the CTHELPER plug-in interface to produce drivers, add-on features, and fixes that will integrate with a tighter fit with Creative抯 sound drivers and utilities. Given its purpose CTHELPER would normally be classified as a "leave alone" background task.Unfortunately there are often problems with CTHELPER, most notably that it can use 100% of CPU time so it's best left disabled.

one problem, when i go to "System Restore Settings" in order to turn it off, my AV says that there is suspicious scripting activity in the file C:\WINDOWS.000\SYSTEM32\Restore\rstrui.exe

i stopped these two processes: devldr32.exe CTHELPER.EXE

dwwin.exe wasnt in the processes menu

CTHelper and UpdReg werent in the add/remove programs window

"C:\WINDOWS.000\SYSTEM\blank.htm" didnt exist

"C:\WINDOWS.000\System32\devldr32.exe" keeps appearing after i delete it

my temporary internet files folder empties itself automatically each time i close my browser

i ran the 3 apps that geekgirl said to do and all 3 were negative for viruses

she said to post a new HJT log "I suggest run those apps then run HJT again and post another logfile in your other thread that contains your first HJT logfile with an explaination." so here is the new file:

the previous log is in one of the above posts and here's the problem:

I went to Windows XP Help and Support, from there I went to System Restore (the third green button under "pick a task"). In the middle left of the window that comes up, there's the link "System Restore Settings." A couple of seconds after I click that link, a McAfee VirusScan message pops up on the right of the screen that says: "The file C:\WINDOWS.000\system32\restore\rstrui.exe contains suspicious scripting activity and has been stopped."
