wireless network

Postby RATFINK » Wed Sep 01, 2004 5:32 am

I have a wireless network that doesn't quite reach my room/ with a good signal. Is there a device that I can plug in half way between the wireless router and my comp to make it stretch farther? I would just place the router downstairs, but I would have a problem with dogs tripping over cables. Thanks.

I have the same situation. I simply installed an Access Point in a central area of the affected level. (In my case the Router is downstairs so I installed the AP upstairs.) The AP is hard wired to the Router but you can mount it to the wall or ceiling. The cost is around $30-40.

the only completely wireless way to do this that I've found is to get a wireless repeater. Buffalo technology makes the ones that are always rated the highest, but they only work with other buffalo technology products. Here is a description of how they work.

if the page looks blank, you may have to hit refresh then stop right away. For some reason the ad that the page is trying to load is making the text disappear for me. Hitting stop b4 that ad loads tho works for me.

here is a link to the actual product page at buffalo tech -

I did hear that you can actually install hacked firmware for some of the linksys routers that will increase the signal strength, but I have no idea how good it works.

and there is always the option of trying a different antenna on your router (if it has detachable antennas like mine does)

If you only serve one room, you could try getting a directional antenna?
