WEIRD MESSAGE

Postby JROK » Thu Sep 02, 2004 1:00 am

Its me again....
I fixed the problem from "DEAD PC!!! HELP!!!" by buying a new motherboard and processor. I decided it was time to replace both any way.

I installed both the new parts and it booted up first try. I set up all the BIOS crap. I then tried to boot up windows but it wouldn't work. This is not the first time this has happened to me. I put the windows xp home ed cd in let the computer boot from that. It got to the setup screen (after a long time of just a black screen) Then the message:

"An unexpected error (1867980871) occurred at line 1768 in d:\xpspl\base\boot\setup\arcdisp.c."

I've never seen this before. What does that mean?? I dont think its my CD because I just used that and it worked fine. What else can I try to get it to boot.

Restart the computer to the Recovery Console,
and then use the chkdsk /r command to repair.

Be patient...let it do it's thing.

you may be seeing the results of ram incompatibility. I've seen many systems do weird things like this because of a ram issue. Try setting the bios to "load failsafe defaults" to see if your motherboard is trying to push too much speed out of your ram and causing your pc to crash.

also, is the D drive the cd drive, or do you have partitions on your main harddrive? If D: is a harddrive, I'd definately be trying chkdisk as cactus recommended

I got the message to stop coming up. I kept making small adjustments, so I'm not sure which one did it exactly. BUT now, I can get to the option to install windows. I click on that or the Recovery options but it says my harddrive cannot be detected. On startup my hd is listed on the list of IDE drives. I've tried changing cables, switching it to secondary, moving RAM around, and any thing else I could think of. I tried it atleast 15 times, each time with a different adjustment.

My problems just never seem to end. I fix one and another one comes up!! I'm getting frustrated.

Anything else I could try???

Thanks for all your help

Image ... Does the Hardrive show up in the Device Manager?
Are there ANY yellow Exclamation marks beside any of the listed Devices?

Let me go over everything again:
I just put a new motherboard and processor in my pc. Everything works fine except I cant get Wndows to startup. The computer boots up but Windows wont start from the harddrive. Therefore, I am using the Win XP cd to boot it up. Next, I kept getting the message that I mentioned in the first post. I fixed that but now the Windows setup is saying it cant find my hd to install or reinstall Windows. When I first turn the computer, on the list of recognized IDE drives, my hd is listed. I've tried changing cables and stuff like that but nothings happening.

Any more advice??

Did you go into the BIOS at boot and make sure the HDD is configed properly and set to ACTIVE.

Do you have a DOS floppy? If so, boot to it & run fdisk. Is your drive recognised & is there a partition shown on it (it wiull probably be an unrecognised format since fdisk does not understand NTFS)

Geekgirl, how do I install drivers if I'm not in Windows? If I put the floppy disk with drivers in, it comes up as 'non system disk'

THANKS TO EVERYONE. ALL PROBLEMS ARE FIXED AS OF RIGHT NOW. EVERYTHING IS RUNNING SMOOTH!!!

believe it or not, I fixed the problem by moving the hd jumper to 'cable select' instead of 'master'
