Hard Drive not getting a drive letter

Postby Nessiah » Wed Sep 15, 2004 4:48 am

Hey,

Hardware info:
I got a hd that my dad wanted me to get info off of that he (or I) am not able to. It's a 4gb hd with the fat32 file system. Its the master on the secondary chain of the IDE channel. I am running Windows XP w/ SP1 and all other updates (except for SP2) ran on NTFS partitions.

Problem:
Computer Management->DiskManagement sees the drive and shows it as healthy, but it does not have an assigned drive letter. When I right click to assign it a drive letter, my only options are delete partition and help; everything else is greyed out. How am I able to bypass this and assign it a drive letter? OR why isn't this drive being read by my computer?

I could format to NTFS, and Im sure it would work; HOWEVER i need info off this drive.

Thanks for your help

no, you misunderstoof, or I didn't explain correctly.

IDE channel 1
Master - system drive NTFS
Slave - my secondary hd NTFS

IDE channel 2
Master - 4gb Fat32 drive that doesn't work
Slave - optical drive

so all my a IDE connections are correct.

Anyways, i couldn't figure out how to read the drive on my computer, so I was able to get hold of a fat32 partitioned computer. When I hooked it up in there it worked fine.

Kool...It is possible to have them set as 2 seperate MASTER drives on seperate IDE channels...could be that it wasn't recognizing its type.

Glad to hear you can access it anyway.

Without getting into cable select master slave or single, remove both of the slave items from the system. Set both drives as single. Check the bios that both are seen and the type is set to auto or LBA.

It should pop up and be readable

Hi Nessiah

Yeah I was going to suggest don't set anything as slave just a master drive and a slave drive, the one you want to see. Let us know .....
