DLLHOST.EXE

Postby liljim » Thu Sep 11, 2003 1:35 am

Can anyone tell me what this is and its importance. It is killing my CPU.In task mangager (winxppro) dllhost.exe maintains 94 to 95% of my cpu causing everything else to stop responding only while im online.I have a diap up connection so i can see the percentage drop when i dissconnect.Im running an AMD Athlon xp2000 chip.I ended the process on this so i could get this forum open.I just upgraded to xp after running 98 for a few years now so im not all to familiar with xp's running process. Thanks in advance for any advise.

finding conflicting info on this, but I did find the below info about it. Hopefully one will get it for you

Gilat SOM Enumerator - dllhost.exe -For Gilat Communications internet satellite systems - associated with SkyBlaster modem. Required if you have this system

link to a longer anser (search for dllhost.exe when the page loads [CTRL]+[F]

I Also found many references to programs in the taskbar using this file.. perhaps you could try removing them.

Quick summary from the web. Dllhost.exe is a program from microsoft that needs to be there. Programs use it, and can sometimes cause it to go wako.

My SUGGESTIONS
1 - check for spyware on your pc (SPYBOT Search and Destroy and Lavasoft's AdAware are programs to do this)
2 - check for critical updates on windowsupdate.microsoft.com
3 - check for viruses housecall.trendmicro.com - I'd do this even if you have an antivirus program on your pc
4 - update older drivers on your pc - I'd especially look at your modem driver especially if you are on dial-up

LET US KNOW YOUR RESOLUTION!!! I seem MANY dicussions on the web regaurding this, but no good resolutions.. it would be nice if people found us with an acual answer to their problem.

This is what i done....

Ran AdAware...no spyware found
Ran Microtrend....no virus found
i am missing alot of updates from microsoft
im running the newest drivers i can get

I ran a file search on my system and found dllhost.exe and DLLHOST.EXE

dllhost.exe was located in C:WINDOWS/system32
DLLHOST.EXE was located in C:WINDOWS/system32/wins

The version in all caps is what was using up my cpu so i deleted it.So far i havent had any problems with the missing file or with the performance loss.dllhost was associated with microsoft as a COM Surrogate as where DLLHOST was associated with nothing.I assume this was a fake file of some sort but i didnt find any possibilties to where it came from or its purpose.

I dont know if this is a proper resolution but it seemed to work for me.
