No dial tone

Postby marrtyn » Wed Sep 17, 2003 12:11 am

I have re-installed ME from scratch. When trying to connect to the net, the PCI modem returns the error message "No dial tone - redialling". There is no problem with the cable or phone.

Any ideas?

Thanks

If you are sure the phone cord is securely plugged into the wall jack and the modem jack and there is a signal then I'd start by looking at the modem. Did you install the drivers for it when you re-installed WinMe? Right Click the "My Computer" icon on your Desktop and select "Properties". Now select "Device Manager". Is your modem listed? Is there an exclamation point beside it? Do you have the CD that came with your computer that contains the misc. programs/drivers?
If you have the drivers for the modem go back to "Device Manager" and Right Click on your modem and select "Properties". Now select the "Driver" Tab and select "Update Driver". Navigate to where the drivers are lacated. (CD or Floppy) Let us know the above answers before we try more. brad

A couple of other questions - is the cable definitely in the correct socket on the modem? Some modems have a 'line' and 'phone' socket. The cable needs to go in the 'line' socket. Secondly, do you have call waiting or any phone services which might change the dialtone from the standard?

Have you tried setting it so that it doesn't wait for dialtone?
