Missing IP address

Postby josh10581 » Thu Oct 07, 2004 4:35 pm

I recently signed up for broadband in a small town (access provided by a larger town), and the setup went fine, until I tried to get on the net. My computer, recently reformatted and running WinXP pro, will not release and renew IP address. I know the connection does work because the technician that set it up, showed that he was able to access the internet from his laptop, using the same cable currently plugged into my comp. In fact he had a rather robust 770+ kb per sec. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. btw no firewall or antivirus software as of yet.

GOTO START>RUN
Type : cmd
When the DOS window opens up..at the PROMPT type:
ipconfig

Does the IP info show up?
If the IP shows close the box and see if you can surf.

Are there any firewalls installed? Is SP 2 installed? If so, turn them off while you try to gain an IP.

I'm assuming you have a DHCP connection direct to your PC. No router in between your cable modem and your PC. Is this correct?

can't get an ip

Postby shelldawn » Tue Mar 15, 2005 1:21 am

kratak & icecube: i've already tried all your suggestions;

ping 127.0.01: 4 packets sent and received
device manager: nic driver installed and "working properly"
subnet mask: i have it all set to auto assign
firewall: i hadn't tried it but i have now, it's off and still no ip

i have a netgear 4-port hub with my dsl modem and two other pcs plugged into it, both other pc's are working fine and can get assigned ip's (i even disconected one thinking it might help...lol). but when i try to plug my laptop into the last port, nothing!

the laptop is a dell latitude d600, came with onboard nic which has a green light that comes on at boot, when i put the rj45 into it, the green light turns amber and another yellow light comes and blink and the light for the port on my hub also comes on, yet no ip.... any other suggestions?

also, this laptop has a clean install of xp pro that i just did, no service packs installed yet.
