friends cd drive

Hes got a cd-rw drive my the company "Memorex" he thinks it goes to 40x speed. It can write music and data cds fine but if he tries to make it read a cd-r or rw then it just goes wrong

well it
1.speeds up
2.then slows to a stop
repeat
and thats y it always goes wrong

it starts to read the cd, goes wrong and then starts reading it again so its like it auto loads the cd many times

it acctually does the auto run multiple times

whilst its trying to get the CD drive working I cant do anything else on the pc

if I try to open the cd drive then it comes up with a blue error screen and then its truely screwed.

He is on windows ME.

those were his words on his problem.

My first suggestion would be to check for a firmware update for this drive.
The drive can obviously read the CD because the auto run is being loaded.
Have him get the make and model number for the CD writer and have him
go to the manufactures website and search for an update.

One other thing to check is make sure he is finalizing the CD properly.

Assuming the disks are OK, it may be worth running a CD lens cleaner through the drive...
