AdAware Suggestions?

Postby ktdancoff » Wed Oct 13, 2004 7:23 pm

Hello all,
I never could get my PC functioning properly after findwhatevernow attacked me so I decdied to wipe my hard drive and then reformat with Windows XP. The first thing I installed was AdAware Plus. I was hoping that y'all might have some advice on how to set up the tweaks, the ad watch settings, and anything else you can think of. I read the manual all the way through but still don't know for sure what is best; any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!

Take care all!

Ad-Aware

ALWAYS CHECK FOR UPDATES
Set these for a Custom Scan
click the gear wheel at the top and check these options:

General> activate these: "Automatically save log-file" and "Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"

Scanning > activate these: "Scan within archives", "Scan active processes", "Scan registry", "Deep scan registry", "Scan my IE Favorites for banned sites" and "Scan my Hosts file"

Tweaks > Scanning Engine> activate this: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

Tweaks > Cleaning Engine: activate these: "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion" and "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Click "Proceed" to save your settings, then click "Start", make sure "Activate in-depth scan" is ticked green then scan your system. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".
Ensure you reboot after running Ad-Aware if it found objects
to remove, so it can properly remove them.

Ad Watch

Postby ktdancoff » Wed Oct 13, 2004 10:24 pm

Hello again my friends,
Just wanted to follow up with one more question: Is Ad-Watch worth running and, if so, do I need to do anything besides the default settings?

Thanks!

Ive never heard of Ad-Watch.
Maybe someone else has but I did a search on Google and came with nothing for a Spyware App with that name.
If you're referring to Ad-Aware...the settings are listed above. And it's worth running!!

Ad-watch is a piece of Ad-Aware that comes with the Pro and Plus versions-but not the freebie. Where I work we are having tons and tons of problems with hijacks so I thought I would be a guinea pig and see if the pay versions of Ad-Aware did us any good. From what I gather Ad-Watch will do real time detection of registry edit attempts and/or spyware and hijack attempts...not sure if it works any better than the freebie version but for $26 we thought we would give it a shot.
