Go to Control Panel -->Network and Internet Connections -->Network Connections. Right click on your Local Area Network connection and click on properties. The first tab will be General. In a box labeled "This connection uses the following items:" will be Novell client and others. Highlight anything that says Novell and click on the uninstall button. That should do it.

I haven't tried a remove on Novell 4.9, but when you tried to upgrade the client, It would spot the old install and request that the program do a remove, and then you would attempt a reinstall on reboot. So try to reinstall client 4.9 and opt for the remove, thats sugestion one.

Suggestion two: do a system restore to an earlier date--don't go past the SP2 update
