dvd-rom drive not playing movies

Postby UserError » Tue Sep 30, 2003 6:11 am

I bought my dvd-rom drive about a year ago and it has always worked properly until recently (actually 2 months ago).

2 months ago I built a new comp out of old pc parts and a new motherboard + cpu, this included a formatted hard drive. The first time I tried playing any dvd movie (a legit copy, not a burnt copy), the dvd player would eventually crash before loading the movie. I've tried multiple players (WinDVD, PowerDVD, and some freeby ones that come with DVD-ROM discs) and they would all crash before loading the movie. I've also tried many different movies that worked on the old computer. The old computer ran XP Pro, along with this one, so I know that's not to blame. The dvd-rom drive however will still read normal cd-rom discs, along with dvd-rom discs (such as the one that came with an issue of PC Gamer). With that I think there's a driver conflict loading the movies, but I'm not sure. Also if I try to play an scvd, I get some error in windows media player (which I forget), with dvd software once again crashing, which also makes me think my codecs are conflicting with dvd-playback.

So, does anyone know what may be causing my problem? thanks...

Have you gone to your DVD drive's web site and checked for driver updates? What brand is it? What are your computer specs.?

I still say update drivers for the dvd rom drive. You sure there are no tags or labels on the drive itself?
Have you tried detecting it with ?
