Graphics Card Question

Postby Jas0n » Tue Nov 16, 2004 9:08 am

Hey guys, i was thinking of changing my really crappy graphics card to a better one. From a ( realli realli old crap ) nVidia Geforce4 MX440 to a nVidia 6600GT.
Now with this changing bussiness, do I have to reformat my computer once i have changed my graphics card? Bcoz im the type that cannot be bothered reformatting.

If you guys can recommened any other good graphics card under $250 AU dollars, that would be great.

unless something goes terribly wrong durring the installation of the new video card, you should not have to re-format your machine. I'd simply follow these steps. (assuming windows of some sort is your OS)
1. Go into the device manager, and remove your current card.
2. Shutdown.
3. remove your old card, put in the new one
4. re-boot, and the machine should prompt you to install drivers for the new card.
5. make sure you have the newest drivers for your card.

I just looked at some benchmarks and it seems like the 6600 is beating out the X600 by ATI, which is the other card I'd reccomend. I've always liked ATI, because I've only had bad luck with Nvidia, so i'd still buy an ati x600 or X700... or wait for the next generation of cards. I'll probably actually be waiting until i change motherboards for pci express and SLI (sli = abiltiy to hook 2 video cards together for ALMOST double the speed of one) buy one now, and upgrade by buying #2 later.

My OS is WinXP, I got a ( once again crappy ) P4 2.0Ghz, 512RAM.

So would those steps work, if i were to say, move from an nVidia to a ATI Radeon?¿
Coz ive been gettin go0t recomendations about ATI range. I was shown this one here ( its an Australian site )

Oh, i was wondering, if you could also provide more, possibly detailed steps on how to uninstall the drivers without re-formatting. Thanks in advanced.

Yes these steps would work. And that card is just below midrange on the market today.
