I have a HP Pavilion N5195 that I put Windows XP Pro on. I’m having trouble with the sound card. It’s a ESS Allegro PCI Audio (DWM). I went to Allegro’s Web page and downloaded the latest driver. Worked great for about 6 mouths. Now when I boot up sometimes the sound is on, but most of the time it is not! I know that there is some program that I installed that must be over riding this hardware, but I like to know if there is any way I can find out with out deleting all the installed programs one at a time.

Here is what I find when I go to- Control Panel / Sounds and Audio Devices Properties / Volume / No Device found. Then I open Audio / Sound playback (still in sound and audio devices properties) /Default device / when it is working it has ESS Allegro for the default, but when it is not I have / Modem #2 inline playback? With when sound is not working is in Sound recording also. Sometimes when sound is not working Voice playback will not change as well for Voice recording. Sometimes they all say No device installed.

So I go to Hardware select ESS Allegro PCI Audio (WDM) / Properties / Driver / Roll Back Drive and that will sometimes fix it for that reboot, but most of the time it will not. Then I may get Update Driver to work, but that doesn’t usually work. So now I have the Driver downloaded to CD and reinstall every time I need sound. Which I find I need less and less because of the time it takes to reinstall (it has to make a backup copy every time, which takes about ten minutes.).

Really would like sound back in my control.

That's a really strange one - it sounds as thought the driver is getting corrupted or something at regular intervals. I'd certainly start with the basics & run chkdsk to make sure there's nothing up with your drive. Then I think all you can do it run msconfig & disable all startup items to see if one of those is effecting it. This would on'y take 1 reboot, and is easily reversible (as opposed to uninstalling/reinstalling multiple programs). It may also be worht running a virus scanner, a spyware scanner & possible a registry cleaner (eg the one at www.jv16.org) to make sure you're running a nice clean system
