MORE RAM

Postby Jokebook » Mon Nov 15, 2004 10:31 am

II am experiencing low frame rate and long load times with my current setup when playing new games like Painkiller, WoW, Doom3. I'm almost posotive (and hopeful) they a large RAM upgrade will help this problem signifigantly. Current Setup:

Asus a7v333-x
ati 9800 pro 128
athlon xp 2200
512mb pc 2200 RAM ???

I would like to put in a gig of extra RAM into this system. However, here in lies my question. Is there a nifty program out there that will let me see what type of RAM exactly it is i have?? B/C i have heard that you can't mix and match.

Do you think this will actually help?

Will the speed RAM i have (i know it is very close to that speed listed) will be sufficient, as I do not wish to purchase new mobo proc combo)

Brad,

Thank you for your quick reply, I hope you might be able to answer a few questions.

How do i find out what kind of RAM I have? ie. what the speed is. I do not have knowledge of what speed my RAM is. Can I just buy and speed i want out of those 3 ???

Basically I'm looking to see if i have pc 2100 or 2700 cause i know it not 1600, maybe there is a way to see in mycomputer, properties. I can't locate :(

thx for crucial website...I buy most my stuff off pricewatch, and I have heard great things about SAMSUNG RAM so i gonna go that way, but have crucial in my old comp and it works great :)

thanks again,

jb

Thank you for your response this is exactly what i Needed :)

As far as my comp goes...do you think the RAM is going to help a great deal....or do you think I really need to upgrade...other parts as well?

p.s. I found that I have pc-2700 RAM, but I am unable to locate on this program the actual brand, If I use a different brand than what is in there...Do you think this would cause a problem???

I never say no to more RAM. If you go on Everest to Motherboard then SPD, it will give you the manufacturor and serial number of your RAM.

Whether or not you should upgrade is up to you. It depends on how much money you have to spend, and what you are using your PC for.

I must say in my opinion you've got a fairly well stocked machine there - a lot of PCs are being shipped with 1Gb RAM, but 512 is still more than enough - I have 512 Mb on my laptop & it runs Doom3 with no problems atall. I would suspect that your problem lies elsewhere...

So I installed the new RAM. BTW thank you for all your help on this. However, how can i be sure it's working. I mean, the computer is running, obviously, so I know it's not messed up, and I also know that it is installed properly.

Is there any settings I should change??? or need to change??? I just want the most out of this system cause i can't really afford any more upgrades :P

Thanks for everything

jb

p.s. wow i always thought that higher resolution would lower my fps. and I have a AGP 4 x slot, and a 8x card :( That would have to be my next upgrade...but it is gonna have to wait.

Its all just plug and pray...er I mean play. hehe

If you right click on My Computer and bring up properties it should tell you how much RAM you have installed.

Running the 2200 is a lil old by now. I would upgrade to a better CPU.

I am running AMD ATHLON XP 3000+, 2 sticks 512MB PC3200 Dual Channel Memory and the Nvidia GeForce 6800GT 256MB DDR3 Video Card. NOTHING lags!!
