Cannot open up multiple IE browser windows

Postby RioKhanada » Sat Nov 27, 2004 7:21 am

Hi, first time poster!

For some reason, I cannot open up multiple IE browser windows. I have tried ctrl-n....file->new->window....clicking on the IE icon 50 million times...nothing. The browser window just closes and reopens again. And again. This is killing me as some sites I go to have multiple windows pop up and now, I can't get in to them because the darn windows keep closing.

I just upgraded to XP Professional. I have IE 6 SP1.

Thanks,

Welcome RioKhanada,

In IE click on Tools, Internet Options, go to the Advanced Tab, in the Browsing section
look for the check box “Reuse windows for launching shortcuts” uncheck the box.

Hi Gecko,

Thanks for the quick response! :)

Unfortunately, it's still not working. I unchecked the box, saved, and rebooted, and the browser windows still are being replaced. Is there any other place I should check?

Thanks again...

Although I dont use IE. Here are some tips that I found that may help.

1. SHIFT-click on a hyperlink. This means: hold one SHIFT button while you click on an Internet link on a page.

2. Right click on the link and select "open in new window".

If the above doesnt help then it may be that one or more Internet Explorer files have become corrupt or damaged. For a fix go here»

Hope this helps

** gouging eyes out at this moment **

I tried. I really tried. I went to the webpage you mentioned above (thanks!) and did everything short of re-installing XP. NOTHING. It is still doing it. I tried "open in new window" too (forgot to mention that in my first post). Still closes the window and reopens in its place. I don't know what else to do. I just want to throw my PC out the window. This is so frustrating (I know this might seem minor to some of the other stuff I've seen listed...but it is quite frustrating).

Any other thoughts? Suggestions?? ** slamming head against concrete floor now **

Have you tried clearing out your browser cache & running spybot?

Hi again!

Yep, I've even done disk defrag and ran Ad-Aware along with Spybot. It's still doing it. Should I even try to download XP SP2? ** trying not to laugh too hard ** I've heard many a nightmare. But I'm getting desperate as I can't open up the websites I go to frequently. Grrrr.

I finally caved in and installed SP2 and Im having no trouble at all. If you dont wish to use the built in firewall you can simply disable it. Also, there is a SP2 just for IE.

And did this ever work?

If it did, try downloading IE6 again and reinstalling it. I have seen this happen back in the Win9X days and that was the fix.

Helloooooooo again!

Postby RioKhanada » Wed Dec 01, 2004 1:49 am

Well. Bad news. I am still "multiple-browser-windowless". I've followed every suggestion possible, including some at the microsoft site. And alas, I am still stuck.

:( :( Will I ever succeed? ** sigh **

Thanks to everyone's help and suggestions. I appreciate it.
