System Lockup at startup

Postby Un4g1v3n » Thu Oct 09, 2003 3:43 pm

When i turn on my pc, I get to windows and it starts loading all these programs. Then everything will stop. I look at the CLOSE PROGRAM dialog box, and it says that almost everything on my computer has stopped responding. Whats wrong? I need an urgent response. (im on a public computer)

I'd try booting into "Safe Mode" and go to Start / Run / Type in MSCONFIG / Click "Enter" / Click on Startup tab / Uncheck everthing and click on "Apply". Reboot in to "Normal Mode" and see if Windows starts. If so, go to to see what programs you really need to have checked in MSCONFIG/Startup.

It could be. I was just trying to get you into Windows. I believe it's more likely spyware.
I'd definitely update and run your AV program after you get Windows started. I'd also download, update, and run .
Let us know how it goes. brad

What operating system are you running and is this new behavior? Has anything been added around the time this started? Can you boot into Safe Mode without any problems?

Ranger, answers to ur questions :
Windows 98
Nothing added (except norton virus search)
Safe-Mode works fine

Here is whats happening NOW:
Afte awhile, the Explorer and Systray stop responding. So as u all know, the Restore Active Desktop thing came up. But it stops loading. So i have to restart my computer. But, when i get to windows, it will freeze while trying to load the Restore Desktop thing (remember, my comp freezes when it hitsa this part) So, i removed my network card and by chance, it was the problem. I restore the desktop with no network card inb my computer. than, i shut down and put the card back in. tghen restart and it works. But after half an hour or so, same thing happens, and i have to keep doing this. What is wrong?!

I would suggest restoring the registry to a point before this started happening. You should have at least 5 days of backups of the registry to pick from so hopefully this problem started during this period.

Glad you fixed it, but just for future reference - zonealarm won't protect you from spyware. There are several ways this spyware can get onto your system, but the best thing you can do is increase the security settings in your browser and not allow anything to run that you aren't sure about. I'd also scan your computer every so often with spybot :)
