Script to delete old files?????

Postby MysteryMan » Mon Dec 06, 2004 12:54 pm

I have started to run regular backups of my data files to another hard disk. It runs a full backup every week and incremental ones every day.

This works fine but, as you will imagine, it creates a load of files that need tidying up now and again.

Yes, I could go in and clean up manually, but, I would like to run a script each time I log on that automatically remove old/unwanted files - probably just keep the last Full backup and Incrementals since then.

Any suggestions for how to write such a script? I could do it in VB - is there anything more suitable?

Thanks!

Why not use a program to syncronize rather than backup? I use a program called SmartSync Pro which I have scheduled to create backups of my data every couple of hours. SmartSync has options to keep copies of old/deleted or changed files, but it keeps that info in a separate location, so it's a lot easier to delete the crap if you need to.

I have to agree with teststrips you are making work for yourself.

I use PowerQuest Drive Image to create a full system backup daily
at 2:00 am, replacing each image backup with the new one.
I also use SmartSync Pro for hourly backups of changed files.
This way once a day, in the morning I just delete everything that SmartSync Pro has created
because I know that Drive Image backed it all up.

I use genie backup manager - you can use it to only add files that have changed, and can customise how far you can roll back through previous file versions.
