Computer won't turn on....

Postby Junior_co » Sat Dec 11, 2004 1:48 am

Every now and then, when we try to turn on the computer in the morning, it won't turn on.

When the power button is pushed, you hear the fans turn on for about 1 second and then everything stops and it doesn't turn on. I can see a LED on on the motherbaord, so I know the motherbaord has power to it...

I thought it was the power switch failing, so I switched the power switch with the reset switch. That seemed to fix it for about a week, but it did it again this morning...

Is there something that would cause this within the system, or is it actually possible that both switches have failed?

Windows XP Home SP2
Gigabyte GA-7VT600
AMD Athlon XP 2700+ 2.17 GHz (socket A)
1 GB RAM
Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9 120GB
Nvidia GeForce FX5600 (dual output)
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live
Samsung CDRW/DVD SM-352B
18” LCD Microtek
21” CRT Wen

Thanks for the assistance.....

Maybe it's a bad outlet you have it running to...did you try a different outlet, and see if it works then?

The computer is running off of a brand new battery back up power supply, which also runs the monitor. The monitor has power to it and so does the mother board. So I guess I've ruled out a bad outlet....

any other thoughts?

Faulty PCU battery pack? Check for any lose wires and make sure all devices are connected properly.

I'm not sure what you mean by PCU battery pack.

If you're talking about uninteruptable power supply (UPS), then everything checks out ok. If you're talking about something internal to the computer, If you'll describe it a little bit better,'ll look into it.

Sorry for my ignorance, and thanks for the help

It sounds like the power supply (in the pc).You can get a tester for $10 bucks or you might have somewhere local you can get one.

That may be what I need liljim, I'll also be checking the switches for continuity this weekend...

I'm leaning away from a bad power supply just because It will turn on and run. I just have to keep hitting the "On" button over and over till it fires up.

Till this weekend, We'll be leaving the computer on, so me better half won't have to worry about it.

Thanks

Junior

EDIT: I just read my first post and noticed that I didn't make it clear that It will eventually turn on, and run. sorry for any confusion...

Forgive me. What I meant to say was:

A faulty PSU (power supply unit) or battery pack.

Sorry :)
