URGENT Help Please.-No Cdrom drivers.

Postby TerryG » Tue Dec 14, 2004 1:32 am

Okay, I had a faulty HDD. I was told to run Powermax to test it. Tried to run it but it locked up on me several times, so Decided against it and rebooted to start up normal. PROBLEM- Insert W2000 floppies and go through the procedure but when it finishes and tries to boot to CDROm, it says NO CD ROM installed.
I can't even get the cd rom to open. Have tried W98 cd but the same-says NO CD ROM. I read sites that suggest installing the CDROM drivers again from the start BUT I really need someone to walk me through it slowly if you have time. Anyone brave enough to try this one.
thanks in advance and hope someone can help me.

yeah i did replace it but I rechecked several times-all plugs and connectors(and then i checked them again and again and again) because i have read so many times that silly problems like this can happen. I even tried different power plugs(as i have a few spare inside my box) in case the plug was faulty. In my BIOS, it says CDROM-NONE. Any ideas?? Sorry for being a pain the ????Terry

Maybe your HDD is just broken...? Is it old?

Yeah that is possible BUT for both the CDROM and the CD-RW to both not be recognised together immediately after i tried to run powermax seems a bit unlucky(although stranger things have happened). Considering that 3 minutes before i tried to run Powermax, they were working perfectly. Wouldn't you think? I read about trying to install the generic drivers again BUT the tech talk lost me. Do you think i should try that first and if so, can you (or anyone) hand feed me through that?

Open the control panel, click on the System icon, then under the Hardware tab click on Device Manager.

Click on the + next to DVD/CD-ROM drives and Floppy Disk Controllers. If there are any yellow question marks or red exclamation points then there's most likely a problem with the drivers.

sorry Dave. That is the problem. Can't start my computer to look at anything. It won't start. When i run the 4 setup discs (w2000pro), it gets to the starting setup but because it can't find a cd drive, it aborts setup.

No worries. Thanks anyway. I'll keep looking and hope something comes up or it might be a trip to the local computer store and pay them to fix my stupidity(that always hurts-and seems to cost mroe too-ha ha). Thanks again.

I've never delt with 2000, but....

Is it possible to revert to a previously known good profile?
Or boot up in a safe mode?

Kinda sounds like you ended up formating your HD.... so none of these would work...

Guess I'm just brainstorming..

Yeah, you got it on the head. Formatted the HDD. So all i have is a computer that won't start unless i use the boot up floppies and like is aid before, when it gets to teh end of the floppies, it can't find a CDROM drive to install windows. Very frustrating. Thanks again. Any ideas are worth listening to in my situation.

Don't know if this'll work since your BIOS doesn't see the CD roms to begin with, but in your BIOS, change your 1st boot device to the CD ROM....

Do you have an emergency boot floppy disk?

Again just throwin out some ideas....
